At first, I had a shear moment of panic thinking “NOOOOOO!!! What are we going to do to get more eyes on our content? Will our engagement rates go done? Wahhhhh!” Before taking your frustration out on Instagram and protesting your go-to social channel — take a D E E P breath!
These things happen. The fact of the matter is, social media is ever-changing. In most instances, when a platform decides to put their foot down on something and make a change, it’s in their eyes for “the greater good”. Instagram has always openly expressed their mission to make this platform an “authentic and safe place for inspiration and expression.” (Instagram)
To ensure the quality of the community stays intact, they have ditched a few features that have been seen as spammy or have the potential to be spammy.
I think Sue is right on this one. Just like when they gave refreshing hashtags the boot on Instagram a few months ago, Instagram is kissing custom geotags goodbye to protect the integrity of the platform.
With that being said, I’m not saying that this new update is concrete. They may listen to the backlash from the community and decide to bring it back, but until then, we must move forward! We as savvy business owners, hustling bloggers and creatives alike must adapt and get a little more creative if we want to draw attention to our posts.
So… what can we do?
How to Call Attention to Your Instagram Posts
Okay, so this method is by no means full proof. Thanks to our friend Noelle of Boho Beach Babe, she brought this to our attention that you can actually still use custom geotags if you have not updated your device. She is currently posting to Instagram using her iPad which has not been updated.
Yes, it may work for now which is wonderful but eventually your app will be forced to update (not to mention the kinks you will run in to without updating, Instagram prefers that you update and the app can start to act really funky). You will at some point just have to accept the change like the rest of us. Instead of fighting it, continue reading to find out what else you can do…
This one’s a no brainer for us. We’ve always recommended using emojis to add an extra visual element to your posts. Learn more about the benefits of using them here!
INSTAGRAM TIP! Wondering how to add spaces in your Instagram captions? It's easy! We used to recommend drafting up your captions in "Notes" adding a space then copy/pasting over in to Instagram. This method S T I L L works and it's great for having more space + time to think through what you really want to say. But, there's now a faster way to do it! 🏃🏼💨 While using the Instagram app, whenever you want to add a space to your caption, simply tap "Return" on your keyboard and that will start a new line break. A little trick I tested out earlier this week after I recovered from my brief moment of shock in loss of custom geotags was to start our caption with capital letters. The caps serve the same purpose as custom geotags due, pointing out what we were about to talk about and draw more eyeballs in.

I love this example from Sue. Every time I see her posts on Instagram, it’s hard to miss because she uses these strikingly bold lines. If you feel that this effect may not be “on brand” with your unique style you could test out with other repeated characters that you feel more comfortable with.

Center Your Captions
Note: This one looks more centered on the app.
Okay, so if you saw this post, you know about the pros and cons for centering your Instagram bio. Turns out, you can use this same method for centering your captions! All you have to do is follow step one in this post, copy the spaces, paste them into your caption, remove any extras that you don't need and voila!
By no means am I super jazzed about this update. Custom geotags was a feature we used ALL the time here at SSS but alas, there's no sense in crying over spilled milk or rather, custom locations.
Which method do you think you will start trying out in place of custom geotags?
