By now we’ve all established that social media is a MUST. However, it’s not enough to just have an online presence; you must be active! Believe it or not, for social media to be effective, you must be active by not only posting your own content, but taking the time to interact with your audience. We see this all the time where businesses use social media to just promote themselves, but we all know it’s never a good idea to solely talk about yourself, and social media is no exception.

Social media is a unique type of marketing because it’s so personal and allows for conversation. This is exactly why marketers are turning towards social media in order to build a relationship with their audience. Okay, now why would you want to build a relationship with your audience?

If you take the time to show your followers you care and establish a positive relationship, all of a sudden they can become customers, repeat customers, or even brand advocates. How to Build Authentic Relationships
Find That Initial Connection
Before reaching out for that initial connection, do some light stalking research to connect with them on a personal level. This shows that you already took the time to learn about them and that you’re genuinely interested! It also allows you to stay away from generic tweets that always go disregarded. A good place to look for this personal connection is their bio, website/blog, or past posts.
When reaching out, the most important thing to remember is to be sincere and show genuine interest. This is not the time to sell yourself, but to build a relationship with them. A tip here is to try and evoke conversation (naturally, of course) and ask questions. This keeps the conversation flowing and you get to learn more about them! Score!

This is so important! There’s nothing that shows you care more than following up with people. Remembering something from past interactions can mean a lot and clearly shows that you’re invested. Ask them how their presentation went or how their new puppy is settling in.
There’s no shortcut to building relationships. It takes time, and a lot of it! But the more you invest, the more they’ll invest in you!
