Social Studio Shop’s Instagram switched to a business account! Yippeee! If you read this post (Instagram Business Profiles Coming Soon - What You Need To Know), you know exactly why we’re dancer emoji over here. Individual post metrics, easy point of contact for your Insta-community + more space to play with in your bio, yes please! What’s not to love?!

Well after sharing a first-look on our Facebook group yesterday, I was surprised to see a lot of our Socialites were a bit hesitant to make the switch. Of course, we always want you to make educated decisions in terms or YOUR social strategy so I figured, why not answer these concerns here in depth!

If you haven’t already, PLEASE take a moment to read this blog post first! Otherwise, you may be a little confused! Just want to make sure we’re both on the same page.

How do I switch to an Instagram Business Profile?

If you’ve logged into Instagram and saw this notification, you’re in luck! All you have to do is go through the process of converting your account. It’s super easy but there are somethings you want to keep in mind…

  • Your Instagram account MUST be “Public”
  • You MUST connect your Instagram to one Facebook Page. If you do not have a Facebook Page, you will not be able to have a business Instagram.
  • You must also be an "admin" on the Facebook Page you want to connect to your Business Instagram Profile!
  • DO NOT use your personal phone number or your personal address! These will be listed as public points of contact so if you don’t want someone calling at odd hours or showing up uninvited, leave these blank and just provide an email address (your work one!).
  • You can switch back to a Personal Instagram Profile anytime you like (for now!)

How to switch to an Instagram Business Profile (Tweet This!)

Now, if you do not see this notification you can try going into your Settings (on Instagram, the little gear icon when you’re viewing your Profile). Scroll down to see if there is an option to “Switch to Business Profile.” If you do not see this option, that just means this update has not rolled out to your account YET. We don’t have any insight into why they are rolling this out slowly but be patient– you should see the notification to switch soon!

If you are serious about your blogging presence, I don’t see any reason why you wouldn’t make the switch right now. For example, if you’re interested in gaining more strategic partnerships, you can now have your email attached directly to your bio (without taking up more characters!). This will allow you more space to highlight who you are as a blogger, cross-promote your other social channels, and also tell your audience where to view your latest blog post or snag your favorites from affiliate links. These are just a few ideas for what you could include now that you have more room to write!

In any case, the good news is, you can always switch back to a personal account if you feel it’s just not right for you.

Do you think the change will affect your reach?

If you tuned in to our Instagram workshop a couple weeks ago, you know our exact process for setting goals on Instagram and measuring our success. You also discovered how the new Instagram algorithm has affected our likes, comments, and traffic to our website. After switching to a Business Instagram Profile, we noticed a decrease in the amount of likes we were receiving immediately after posting, BUT we saw an increase in our likes over a longer period of time, meaning the lifespan of our “likes” are actually longer now that we have made the switch.

What shocked me even more is that our comments almost tripled after making the switch to a Business Profile! It’s important to note that the changes in engagement can be caused by multiple factors– the Instagram algorithm, the relevance of the topic, and the image but for all of you thinking that this switch will might negatively impact your reach, it’s SO key that you test this out on your own!

Are Instagram Business Profiles available for Android users?

I have searched EVERYWHERE for this answer. Android users, I’m sorry to say we do not know! If by chance you are an Android user and you have successfully switched over, please comment below! We would like to help our Droid Socialites out!
