This week we’re getting social with one of our SLC social studio shop sponsors, Vive Juicery. Brittany Thaxton, co-founder of this cold-pressed juice company shares with us the literal meaning of their name, Long Live Fresh Juice! Vive started with passion & they live, breathe & drink juice! This amazing company came to life thanks to the amazing community pooling together on Kickstarter & today, Brittany shares with us all the juicy details of the business, learning moments and inspiring community they have formed since getting their dream off of the ground!
We’d love to hear more about Vive Juicery. What does your company specialize in?
On the surface, we’re a cold-pressed juice company based in SLC. We offer the tastiest, most nutrient-dense fruit and veggie juices, yummy raw treats & juice cleanses that range between 1-5 days. But really, we’re all about love, local farms & dance parties. Juice is just our way to bring a bit more of that into your daily life.
How did you get started juicing & when did you know this was what you wanted to make your career out of?
We’ve tried every eating lifestyle out there - vegan, vegetarian, paleo, gluten-free, raw… we’ve tried it all. Nothing really stuck completely until we found juice - the way we felt was so different - full of energy, light… alive.
I always knew I wanted to open up a coffee shop or cafe & Bryce and I both wanted to build a business together. After a trip to San Francisco (where the juice life is well-established) we realized it wasn’t more coffee that Salt Lake needed - it was juice.
We both felt a bit stuck in our 9-5 lives but the idea of business plans, pitching to investors, ROI, COGS and a whole lot of other acronyms… all of it felt really overwhelming. One day we decided that traditional methods to starting a business didn’t have to be the only way to start a business. We found Kickstarter and the rest is history.
We understand that you + your hubby own Vive together! How did you two meet?
Bryce and I grew up with the same group of friends since junior high but somehow our paths never crossed until his senior/my junior year of high school. Of course, when we first “met", I had a boyfriend and we both went on our way. A year later, circa fall 2007, that boyfriend was out of the picture and we randomly ran into each other at a Modest Mouse concert and have been practically inseparable since.
Where do you find inspiration for your yummy drinks + raw treats?
A handful of our recipes are based on recipes we used to make ourselves, way before we ever thought of Vive. As time has passed, we’ve done a lot of experimenting with seasonal, local ingredients which really is the heart of our business. Lastly, we find inspiration from our travels. For example, we went to Mexico in 2014 and fell in love with the tropical, vibrant flavors. When we came home, our La Vallarta juice (spinach, pineapple, orange, celery, parsley & nopal cactus) was born.
How do you get the word out about your company?
Word-of-mouth advertising, especially via social media, accounts for 90% of our advertising. In the year and a half that we’ve been in business, we’ve spent less than $5,000 on advertising… because we don’t need to. We believe that when you create a worthwhile product and couple it with an incredible face-to-face experience, your business speaks for itself and the love spreads like wildfire.
What has surprised you most about owning Vive Juicery?
I am amazed & totally honored by how quickly and wholeheartedly the community has rallied behind us. I never thought that we’d be producing nearly 500 bottles of juice per day in less than two years. The growth has been totally unreal and I’ve never been happier to not know if work-life balance is real. ;)
What’s your favorite social media network and why?
Instagram. Without a doubt.
Personally, I’m a very visual person and I love to see how people write their stories through images. Business-wise, I think Instagram is one of the most brand-friendly platforms out there. How can you take care of your fans if you don’t really know who they are? Instagram is a way to see into the lives of your key demographic and connect directly with your fans and followers. Engagement is everything.
If you could give other entrepreneurs one tip of advice, what would it be?
Rise above the fear and the excuses - cut the crap & go for it and let your heart be your guide.
What exciting things does Vive Juicery have in store for us in 2015?
Oh boy, 2015 is gonna be an incredible year. As far as our menu goes, we’ll be debuting an expanded food menu, new cleanse options, summer seasonal specials and a few other surprises. Our Sugar House location will have a patio in the next few weeks (!!!), you’ll find us at the summer markets again and if everything goes our way, we’ll have two more locations by the end of the year!
