Ekk! Our next social studio is right around the corner! As we're putting the finishing touches on our workshop, we're taking some time to chat with another amazing sponsor, Megan Ochoa from Of All Things Bakery. This San Diego blogger and baker-extraordinaire spills her secret ingredients for creativity, expansion, and the importance of networking.
Can you tell us about Of All Things Bakery?
Of All Things Bakery is a small pastry business that specializes in cupcakes, but also other delicious treats. After working at several bakeries over the past couple of years, I found that I wanted to be my own boss and make my own yummy creations. We provide sweet treats for all kinds of events including weddings, parties, beer tastings, etc.
We hear beer-infused cupcakes are your specialty. Obviously, we HAVE to know more about that!
With our beer-infused cupcakes, we take local San Diego breweries' craft beers and bake them directly in to our cupcakes. We match the different flavors of the beers to the cupcakes. For example, a darker beer like a stout would go nicely with a chocolate cake to bring out the chocolately flavors of the stout.
How did you get started baking, when did you know this was what you wanted to make your career out of?
Growing up, my mom was always in the kitchen making cookies and cakes, so I would obviously be in there helping her. As I got older, I thought about going to pastry school, but wanted to make sure I was passionate about baking. From there I worked in a few local bakeries, like Zooies, and found that I really just wanted to make my own creations instead of following someone else's recipes.
Where do you find inspiration for your tasty treats?
I get inspired by the vast varieties of beer that San Diego has to offer and my mom old recipes. I also try to tailor the cupcakes or other treats to the company or customer through decorations, but still keep it classic and simple to represent OATB.
You started out as a blogger, do you think this experience has effected your business?
Blogging has helped open doors and make connections for Of All Things Bakery for future orders and events. It started as just a way to express thoughts and creativity and now I hope it can help to expand my business in the future. I took a bit of a hiatus for the holidays, but I'll get back to blogging soon!
How do you get the word out about your company?
Social media and word of mouth are two big ways we try to get the word out about OATB. Networking at events is also important to make connections with other food vendors and customers.
What's your favorite social media network and why?
Instagram works the best for OATB because you eat with your eyes first! Instagram also connects to other social media like Facebook where people can also like and share.
If you could give other entrepreneurs one tip of advice, what would it be?
I would say just to make sure you love what you're doing and keep pushing forward.
"Entrepreneurs, love what you do and push forward!" (Tweet this!)
What exciting things does Of All Things Bakery have in store for us in 2015?
We're going to continue doing events at local breweries, but are also going try other street fairs and farmers markets. We're also going to experiment with other pastries to compliment our beer-infused cupcakes.
