Whether you work from home or work in an office, a productive start to your day is essential for crushing those girlboss goals. Without a sufficient morning routine it’s way too easy to start your day off on the wrong foot, and that just doesn’t work out well for anyone. Everyone’s routine will look different based on your situation, but there are a certain number of things you can do each morning to make sure you’re setting yourself up for success.
1.Don’t pick up that phone!
I know, I know. Easier said than done, right? But so many of us start our day by rolling over in bed and immediately grabbing our smartphones. Not only is this not super great for your eyes, but it turns on parts of your brain a little too quickly that aren’t necessarily ready to be stimulated yet. It can also mess with your intention or focus for the day if you’re immediately scrolling through your social media and see something that sets you off.
2. Hydrate + Caffeinate
For me, coffee is life. But I also make sure to start each morning with lots and lots of water. In the winter, I’ll usually drink warm water with lemon to cleanse my system and help gently wake me up. Then enter my best friend, coffee. If you’re more of a tea person, that works too! Just make sure you have all the fixin’s at home to make yourself something you love. It will become a treasured part of your morning ritual and give you something to look forward to when you don’t necessarily want to crawl out of bed.
3. Make the Bed
This is a simple, but vastly important step in a morning routine. It signals to your brain that sleep time is over and it’s time to take on the day. It also instantly makes your room look 70% cleaner than if you just leave everything strewn about. It’s a simple mind-trick, but it works!
4. Visualize your day
Before you do anything, take a quiet moment to sit down and visualize your day. Think about what your ideal day would look like with everything you need to accomplish and everything you want to do. Need and want are the keywords here. By visualizing your day you’re helping yourself prioritize and set your day with intention. Which leads us into number 5.
5. Set your top 3 goals for the day
These can be work related, personal, or anything you want. List out the three absolute most important things you have to get done that day and make those a priority. By writing them down you’re acknowledging your priorities and giving yourself the permission and intention to tackle those first. Plus, how good will it feel to cross those big ones off the list? My favorite way to do this is with my “Get Shit Done” notepads from Studio 9 Co. It’s the perfect format for outlining goals + to-do’s!
6. Make your to-do list
First, you’ll need to check your to-do list from the day before. Ideally, everything will be checked off and you’ll start with a blank slate - but life happens. Everything you didn’t complete from the day before should be moved to today’s to-do list and prioritized. Then start making a list of everything else you’d like to get done for the day. Not to be confused with your top 3 goals of the day, to-do’s are items that need to get done, but won’t necessarily ruin your flow if they don’t.
7. Do Something Active
Now, you don’t have to go for a 10 mile run - but if you want to, good for you! Just do something to get your blood circulating. I like doing a little bit of baby/mama yoga or taking the dogs out for a brisk walk to start my day. There’s something about starting your day with a little activity before you dive into work that will clear your mind and help you really focus your intention.
8. Check in with the world
Ok, you can pick up the phones now! But instead of jumping on Facebook, I recommend scrolling through the latest news headlines before anything else. An informed girl boss is a smart girl boss, and you should know what’s going on in the world around you. You don’t have to spend hours doing this - find your favorite source and check in with that one each morning before moving on to the social aspects.
