Secure the RIGHT Username

Have you ever plugged in an address to Google Maps, traveled to your destination (or so you thought) then found yourself in the wrong place entirely? I did this the other day. I was trying to get to a friend’s house for a party and I ended up on the opposite side of town all because my friend forgot tell me her place was North instead of South.

The same issues can happen when you launch a new social platform without first securing the RIGHT username. You may know your social “address” but can anyone else find it? Before securing a username for your new social platform, make sure that your name is searchable, consistent + familiar.

Most social platforms have a great mini search engine built into them. Knowing this, you’ll want to ensure that your username is SEO friendly. To give you an examples of this, let’s imagine that you are a wedding planner signing up for Twitter. To have a searchable username, you could use any of the following keywords in your name, “wedding”, “planner”, “events”, etc.. This way, anytime someone is searching for one of those keywords, your account has a higher potential for showing up at the top of the search results.

Consistent + Familiar

The last thing you want when trying to get your community to follow you on another platform is to confuse them. Keep things simple by having consistency across the board with your usernames. Another factor you’ll want to consider is how your community refers to you + what they are familiar with. This is especially important if you have a blog for example. If the world knows you as A Balancing Peach, as opposed to Kelsey, then your username should reflect that.

Establish a Professional Appearance

When I did finally get to my friend’s place (after getting the RIGHT address), I walked into the most gorgeous space! I practically had to pick my jaw up off of the ground as I stood in awe over her immaculately tidy home. The decor was on point and everything seemed to just flow together. This is the effect you want your social guests to feel when they enter into your virtual home (your social platforms).

To give your home a “put-together” kind of feel, you’ll want to take sometime to brand your platform. I’ve rounded up a few resources to get you started!

Know Your Audience

With my past experience throwing and attending several successful parties, I can tell you that the must-have for any perfect party experience is a great guest list. When you have a clear understanding of who you really want to invite to your social party then you can better determine what you will need to do to attract those perfect party peeps.

Likewise, on social it’s 100x easier to build your community with the RIGHT people that can help you meet your business goals when you know exactly who you are marketing to and how to speak to them.

Here’s a quick quiz to test your ideal audience knowledge…

  • What does your ideal customer or client look like?

  • What are their interests?

  • What motivates + drives them?

One thing I LOVE about a good party is awesome snacks and refreshments. At my friend’s house the other day, I found myself making several trips in and out of the kitchen to go back for seconds okay more like thirds and fourths, for this mouthwatering homemade cheese dip. If you want your social community to keep coming back after their initial visit, you’ll want to make sure there’s plenty of snacks (content) for them to consume and remember you by.

The last thing every hostess with the mostess checks off her list is having a party plan in place! There’s nothing worse than showing up to a party where you don’t really know anyone that well and you’re not really sure what to expect. After munching on a few too many tortilla chips, you’re left staring awkwardly at each other wondering “what do we do now?”

Don’t let the party burn out before it even gets started! Have a solid social strategy in place before inviting people over. This way, your guests are bound to have a great time, stick around and want to come back for more!

Somethings to consider when building your party social strategy…

  • What are your goals for hosting the party?

  • Where does the party need to take place– is this the right platform for you to host?

  • Who will you invite to the party?

  • How will you get the word out?

  • What will you have available for your guests once they arrive?

  • Do you want them to do something once they’re there? (i.e. purchase, visit your website, interact, etc.)

  • How will you keep them around and coming back for more?

  • How will you measure the success of your party?
